Standards-based Management and Recognition

Another methodology for improving the performance and quality of health services is known as Standards-Based Management and Recognition (SBM-R). Developed by Jhpiego, a Johns Hopkins University-affiliated international non-profit organization specializing in reproductive, maternal and child health, Standards-Based Management and Recognition involves the systematic use of performance standards as the basis for the audit of the organization and functioning of health services. SBM-R links external audit of compliance with standards with a performance improvement approach to engage facilities and health care providers in taking steps to improve their compliance with the standards and uses explicit recognition mechanisms to acknowledge and reward achievement of the standards. In this regard, SBM-R is similar to facilitated accreditation.

Jhpiegohas applied SBM-R to a number of different health areas, including maternal and newborn care, child health, voluntary counseling and testing for HIV, and infection prevention.
