The National Guideline Clearinghouse (NGC) is a comprehensive, open-access database including over 2100 diagnostic, surgical, and treatment guidelines, over 2000 disease or condition-related practice guidelines, and over 1400 drug-related guidelines. The database include structured abstracts (summaries) about each guideline and its development and links to full-text guidelines, where available, and/or ordering information for print copies. Individual guidelines referenced in the NGC are the products of named organizations that are solely responsible for their content.
In addition to the guideline abstracts and links, the NGC features syntheses of selected guidelines and expert commentary on important issues related to specific guidelines. Key elements of each synthesis include the scope of the guidelines, the interventions and practices considered, the major recommendations and the corresponding rating schemes and strength of the evidence, the areas of agreement, and the areas of disagreement.
The NGC was created by the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ) of the United States Department of Health and Human Services in partnership with the American Medical Association and the American Association of Health Plans. The NGC was designed to provide doctors, nurses, other health care providers, health care delivery organizations, medical specialty and professional societies, health insurance plans, and others with a web-accessible mechanism for obtaining objective, detailed information on clinical practice guidelines and to further their dissemination, implementation and use. While developed primarily for audiences in the United States, health care providers and organizations in other countries can benefit from this health care guidelines resource.
